GST 2.0 complaints: The Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms are effective from September 22, 2025. Speaking to reporters on Monday, October 29, Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare stated that the National Consumer Helpline (NCH) has received thousands of complaints related to GST 2.0 since the implementation of GST. Khare informed reporters that "Since the GST reforms, the National Consumer Helpline (NCH) has received approximately 3,000 complaints. These complaints are being forwarded to the CBIC (Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs) for action."
The Ministry is monitoring.
Khare further stated that the Consumer Affairs Ministry is closely monitoring all these cases. Through this, misleading information is being spread to avoid passing on the benefits of Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate reductions to consumers, and consumers are being deceived.
Ministry using AI and chatbots
Khare stated that the ministry is using AI and chatbots to obtain accurate information about these complaints. He explained that retailers are not passing on the benefits of GST rate reductions to consumers, forcing the government to strengthen its monitoring system.
What is GST Reform?
A historic change to India's indirect taxation system, also known as the GST Reform, was implemented on September 22nd. Under the GST Reform, the tax system was simplified and only two slabs were introduced: 5% and 18%.
Under the GST Reform, many household items that previously fell under the 12% tax slab were brought under the 5% tax slab. This has led to a reduction in the prices of everyday items. Shampoo, soap, toothpaste, baby products, and dairy products have become cheaper. Additionally, a 40% tax has been imposed on tobacco, cigarettes, and sin goods. The 18% GST on life and health insurance has also been eliminated.
