Delhi: In a significant decision, the Delhi government has allowed women to work night shifts in shops and business establishments. However, their written consent will be required.
Employees cannot be made to work more than 48 hours a week.
The Delhi government's Labor Department issued a notification in this regard on Thursday. According to this notification, no employee will be made to work more than 48 hours a week or more than 9 hours a day. If an employee works overtime, they will be paid double their normal wage.
The government has also clarified that establishments where women work night shifts must have adequate security, transportation, and CCTV.
An internal committee will be formed to address complaints.
To protect the interests of women, every organization will be required to establish an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) to address complaints related to sexual harassment at the workplace.
No more than five hours of continuous work
The notification also states that no employee will work for more than five hours continuously, with mandatory rest periods. Furthermore, employers must ensure that no employee is forced to work exclusively on night shifts.
To enhance security, CCTV cameras will be installed in shops and offices, and their footage will be preserved for at least one month. Employees will also receive legal benefits such as compensatory leave, minimum wages, provident fund, insurance, and bonuses for working on national holidays.
It is noteworthy that Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena approved the government's proposal to employ women employees in night shifts in shops and other commercial establishments earlier this year.
