Now, the day is not far when robots will be able to give birth to children like humans. Yes, a Chinese technology company has claimed to have developed a robot that will conceive and give birth to a child like a woman. According to Zhang Chifeng, founder and CEO of China's Kaiwa Technology, this humanoid robot will be equipped with an artificial uterus, in which the fetus will be able to develop from pregnancy to birth. Its price will be kept less than 1 lakh yuan (about 14 thousand US dollars), and it will be available in the market in the next year.
Zhang said that artificial uterus technology is now fully mature, and by fitting it in the stomach of the robot, such interaction between humans and robots will be possible, so that the fetus can develop. This system will be different from the incubator, where there will be artificial amniotic fluid in the uterus, and the fetus will be nourished through a tube.
These people will benefit
This technology is being made especially for those youth who do not want to get married or want to avoid the biological process of pregnancy. According to Zhang, this project has been started to solve the problem of population decline. The company has organized forums with officials of Guangdong province on this and has also submitted policy proposals on ethical and legal aspects. Kaiwa Technology, established in 2015, has already made many service and reception robots.
Support and opposition
Many people are supporting Zhang's project. Some people called it a step to eliminate the physical burden of pregnancy for women and said that if the price is affordable, they will buy it immediately. At the same time, critics say that it is against human ethics and the birth of an embryo without connecting to the mother would be 'cruel'. If this project is successful, then people struggling with infertility will also be able to have children.
Infertility is increasing in China
According to the Chosun Biz report, the rate of infertility in China has increased from 11.9% in 2007 to 18% in 2020. Cities like Beijing and Shanghai are now covering artificial insemination and IVF under medical insurance.
In 2022, the Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Technology in Jiangsu province developed an AI-based 'nanny robot' that monitored and cared for embryos in artificial wombs. However, Chinese law prohibits growing human embryos in artificial wombs for more than two weeks.
