Yet one tradition returned this week with the US News & World Report Best Colleges rankings. Despite the scrutiny, the latest edition shows rankings of universities in the US over the past year.
Princeton University kept its place at the first position, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the second and Harvard University at the third. Stanford University and Yale University tied at No. 4, highlighting how little movement occurred among elite schools. Among the top 50 national universities, only three showed significant movement this year, California Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, and the University of Chicago. Northeastern recorded the biggest change, rising eight places to a tie at No. 46.
The rankings, based on 17 measures such as graduation outcomes, faculty resources, research activity and reputation, continue to shape choices for students and parents despite long-standing criticism. Many college leaders argue that reducing institutions to a numerical order oversimplifies the value of higher education. Still, US News maintains that its lists serve as an important guide for families making one of life’s largest financial and academic decisions.
