Kolkata: In a bid to commemorate 75 years of the National Sample Survey (NSS), the National Statistics Office (NSO)-Kolkata organized “Anvesha 2.0”, a nationwide quiz contest on official statistics.
Around 42 colleges participated in the contest, reflecting the growing interest in the field of official statistics among youth. Several colleges and universities from across Kolkata and adjacent areas were invited with teams comprising two students each.
Sanjib Basu, Deputy Director General, FOD (Regional Office Kolkata), spoke about the immense career opportunities for students of Statistics in both government and private sectors.
S K Bhanawat, Deputy Director General of EnSD, spoke on objectives and national importance of the National Sample Survey.
The quiz began with a preliminary written round comprising 20 questions, based on which the top 10 teams were shortlisted for the final round. The finale featured engaging and thought-provoking rounds, covering topics such as official surveys, key national indicators, and statistical goals.
After the contest, Globsyn Business School became the champions while University of Kalyani secured the position as the 1st runners-up. St. Xavier’s College was declared the 2nd runners-up.
Salil Mukhopadhyay, Additional Director General, EnSD, emphasized the relevance of statistics in everyday life and its role in evidence-based decision-making.
Additional Director General-HSD Ajay Baksi spoke on the legacy and scope of surveys conducted by NSSO over the years.
The winning teams were awarded trophies, medals, certificates, and cash prizes, while all participants received certificates of participation, acknowledging their effort and enthusiasm, a statement said.
