Benidorm Brit holidaymaker 'strangled her friend with vacuum cleaner lead'

A female British holidaymaker has been arrested inBenidormafter allegedly strangling to death her friend from the UK with a vacuum cleaner lead during a row.

A friend of the pair, both aged in their 60s, called the emergency services around midnight to beg for help with the incident having happened in an apartment in Benidorm’s 'Little England' area. Police rushed round to the apartment where the argument is said to have taken place but it was too late and the victim was already dead by the time they arrived.

The alleged killer, aged 64, is said to have confessed to the murder after she was taken away from the scene by police. Local reports said the dead woman was found with the cable still round her neck. An initial post-mortem has confirmed she was strangled.

It is not yet clear when the suspect, who has not been named, will be hauled before a judge.

A spokesman for National Police, confirming the arrest, said today: “A woman aged 64 has been arrest on suspicion of killing another 66-year-old woman, both from the UK. The investigation is ongoing and at the moment we can’t give out any more information.”

The nature of the relationship between the alleged killer and her suspected victim is not yet known, while the nationality of the third woman who called police has also not been revealed.

The flat is in a private residential gated estate which is said to be extremely popular with British expats and tourists.

Before being taken to a police station the arrested woman was taken to a health centre in Benidorm for a medical examination. The vacuum cleaner lead was taken away by police so forensic experts could test it for DNA. Detectives are also understood to have taken a statement from the witness to the horror killing.

A court has been placed in charge of the ongoing criminal investigation as they await a full police report and the results of the full post-mortem. The British woman’s body was removed from the scene around 3am this morning.

Although detectives have not confirmed the dead woman and the detainee were both holidaymakers, local reports said the pair were spending a few days at the apartment where the crime occurred.
