Chappell Roan fans just learn what 'Pink Pony Club' is actually about

Reading and Leeds Festival is currently underway and revellers have been loving the impressive line-up. Bosses behind the events at Richfield Avenue in Reading and Bramham Park in Leeds secured huge artists for 2025 – including Hozier, Bring Me The Horizon and Travis Scott.

However, Chappell Roan is definitely one of the most talked-about singers. Born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz on February 19, 1998, in Willard, Missouri, she adopted the stage name "Chappell Roan" as a tribute to her late grandfather. And after her breakthrough in 2017, she's gone from strength to strength.

The 27-year-old has tunes including HOT TO GO!, Naked in Manhattan, Casual and Good Luck, Babe!. But it's the chart-topping track Pink Pony Club that many festival-goers will be looking forward to hearing.

So what does Pink Pony Club actually mean? Thankfully, the singer has previously spoken about her inspiration behind the lyrics. And people recently discussed this in a Reddit thread.

One social media user asked: "Meaning behind Pink Pony Club? Is there one? What is it about? I have a hard time comprehending lyrics.

"Can someone explain it to me and dumb it down? I’m at work, or else I’d try and find a video explaining."

Thankfully, fans were quick to point out that Chappell had spoken about her inspiration in the past.

One person said: "It’s about her first experience being at a gay bar, The Abbey! She talked about it in one of her interviews I listened to - how it was kind of her first time seeing other queer people so open and proud."

Another wrote: "There was a strip club in Springfield (Chappell’s 'hometown') called The Pony. The whole building was painted pink."

A third also replied: "My mum loves the song and thought it was a metaphor for being a stripper, but it's based off of her first time at a gay bar in Hollywood called The Abbey! The title is based off a strip club that was painted hot pink in her hometown, so I guess she wasn't to far off."

Meanwhile, someone else commented: "There is actually a chain strip club in Memphis, TN and Mississippi called the Pink Pony, and I was convinced that it was about those and that there must be more of them, but it seems not."

Chappell confirmed that the song is about her experience in a gay bar called the Abbey – as it really showed her to embrace her true self.

Speaking to Headliner Magazine, she said: "All of a sudden I realised I could truly be any way I wanted to be, and no one would bat an eye.

"It was so different from home where I always had such a hard time being myself, and felt like I’d be judged for being different or being creative. I just felt overwhelmed with complete love and acceptance, and from then on I started writing songs as the real me."

One of the tracks was "Pink Pony Club", which became one of the reasons she's such a global superstar to this day.

Chappell added: "I needed to be myself and I wanted to feel theatrical. I wanted it to feel like a show for people. That's what I feel like 'Pink Pony Club' is doing, and what my other music that will come out will do as well."
