Lionel Messi looks set to extend his glittering career with a new Inter Miami contract reportedly 'close'. The Argentina icon joined the MLS side on a two-and-a-half year contract back in 2023 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain.
There are only a few months remaining on that deal and Messi’s future has remained up in the air, with no sign of a new contract being agreed. However, that appears to have changed over recent days.
According to ESPN, Messi and his current employers are ‘close’ to an agreement that will see the veteran forward sign a new multi-year contract in the United States. The two parties are reportedly in final discussions, with just a few details left to sort out.
Once agreed, the new deal will be sent to Major League Soccer for ratification. The new contract looks likely to extend Messi’s glittering career for the time being.
The 38-year-old had previously hinted that he was ready to hang up his boots after appearing in what looked like his final World Cup qualifier in Buenos Aires. Speaking in an emotional interview, Messi said: "There are so many emotions. I've experienced so many things on this field.

"It's always a joy to play in Argentina with our people. I'm very happy. Being able to finish in this way here is what I always dreamed of.
"For many years I have had the affection of Barcelona, and my dream was to have it here too, in my country with my people. For many years a lot of things were said but, well, I'll stay with all the good."
He added: "We'll see. I haven't made a decision about the World Cup. I'll finish the season then I'll have pre-season, and there will be six months left. So we'll see how I feel."
Messi’s new contract with Miami will finally see the demands of head coach Javier Mascherano met. Speaking earlier this year, he confirmed his desire to see the forward tied down to a fresh deal.

"Obviously, as a coach, I want him to renew his contract as soon as possible and that the news can be given as soon as possible, above all for the tranquility of the fans, the tranquility of everything around the club," Mascherano said om May.
"I'm not the one who has to deliver it or comment on it. I am not in the negotiations."
Messi joined Inter Miami from PSG in 2023 and he has enjoyed a stunning spell in MLS so far having scored 62 goals in 75 appearances in all competitions. He has helped the side to win the 2023 Leagues Cup and last season’s Supporters’ Shield.
