Rare 50p Beatrix Potter coin selling for over £20,000 on eBay

Beatrix Potter fans may be able to buy a rare 50p coin featuring one of her beloved characters on eBay – so long as they have £20,000 to spare.

The small itemis being listed on the online marketplace for over 40,000 times its face value and features the Beatrix Potter character Benjamin Bunny on its front. It also has Queen Elizabeth II on the back, and dates back to 2017.

The Tale of Benjamin Bunny is a children's book written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter, and which was first published by Frederick Warne & Co. in 1904. It follows the story of the illustrated Benjamin Bunny, who helps his cousin Peter Rabbit through a fun range of mishaps and adventures.

According to the description: "This product is a very rare Benjamin Bunny 50p coin from 2017, featuring Queen Elizabeth II. Minted in the United Kingdom with a fineness of 0.5, this coin is uncertified and a valuable addition to any coin collection.” See the listing here.

Uncertified coins, otherwise known as raw coins, have not been graded by a third party and therefore have a lower premium than a graded coin of the same type and issue.

The coin is on the market for £20,086.68 or the best offer, Bournemouth Echo reports. Meanwhile, the delivery price is set at £8.75 for the item, which is listed in Banbury. Similar rare 50p coins are listed on eBay for large prices.

Rare coins can fetch sellers high earnings online. One Instagram coin guru, known as @CoinCollectingWizard, recently revealed the "rarest" coin of 2025, as previously reported by The Mirror.

He was referring to the brand-new Bee £1 coin which has just been released in UK circulation and urged that "collectors will be desperate to get their hands on it". The coin has an image of two bees on its face, symbolising the over 250 species which live in Britain.

Royal Mint has confirmed that 30.8 million new £1 coins are entering circulation across the UK. Of these, 7.5 million feature the portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, just 170,000 of which are new 2025-dated Bee £1 coins - making them a comparatively rare find for coin collectors.
