Rajya Sabha MP and noted social activist Sudha Murthy has become the latest target of cybercriminals. Fraudsters, posing as officials from the Department of Telecommunications, tried to intimidate her by falsely claiming that her mobile number was linked to a pornographic video and could soon be disconnected.
What Happened? The incident took place on September 5, when Murthy received a call from an unknown number. The caller introduced himself as a Department of Telecommunications official and claimed that her mobile number was not linked to Aadhaar and was being misused.
To make the scam appear genuine, the number even showed up on the Truecaller app as belonging to the Department of Telecommunications. Realizing the seriousness of the matter, Sudha Murthy wasted no time in filing a police complaint.
FIR RegisteredFollowing her complaint, an FIR was lodged at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Bengaluru under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act. According to police officials, the caller deliberately assumed a false identity and attempted to gather Murthy’s personal information.
Investigations are currently underway to track down the fraudsters. Police have also urged the public to remain alert, as such scams are increasingly common and often target both high-profile figures and ordinary citizens.
