A major political stir erupted on Monday after a Delhi court framed corruption charges against RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, former Chief Minister Rabri Devi, and Tejashwi Yadav in connection with the IRCTC scam case. The special CBI court at Rouse Avenue, presided over by Judge Vishal Gogne, ruled that there was sufficient evidence to proceed against all the accused, stating that a “criminal conspiracy” had been orchestrated to gain undue benefits.
The case dates back to the period when Lalu Prasad Yadav served as the Union Railway Minister, during which contracts related to catering and maintenance of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) hotels were allegedly handed to private companies in exchange for land parcels transferred to the Yadav family.
Court’s Observation and ChargesThe court observed that the accused had conspired to misuse their official position for personal gain. Following years of investigation, the CBI had filed a comprehensive chargesheet detailing how valuable properties were acquired by shell companies allegedly linked to Lalu Yadav’s family members. The trial will now begin, marking a crucial stage in this long-pending corruption case.
Political Leaders ReactThe ruling triggered swift political reactions across parties. Independent MP Pappu Yadav, commenting on the development, said, “In this system, everyone has something to hide. The court has merely taken cognizance; it’s not a final verdict. There are still legal options open before the High Court and Supreme Court. We respect the court’s decision, but it’s important to see how the evidence holds up during the trial.”
He further added that the Yadav family had been “victims of political conspiracy” and emphasized that the judicial process must be allowed to unfold without prejudice.
“A Unique Kind of Corruption,” Says BJP’s Manoj TiwariReacting sharply, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari termed the alleged scam “a unique form of corruption,” adding, “It’s shocking that land was taken in exchange for jobs. Such a system of bribery is unheard of. If the charges are proven true, it would expose one of the most unusual corruption cases in Indian political history.”
Congress and RJD Play Down the ImpactWhile the opposition sought to portray the verdict as politically motivated, leaders from the Congress and RJD dismissed suggestions that it could affect the upcoming Bihar elections.
Congress MLA Shakeel Ahmad Khan said, “This case will not make any difference. We have always stood with the marginalized and downtrodden. Attempts to suppress our voices will fail. The judiciary will decide the matter in due course.”
Similarly, RJD MP Fayaz Ahmad commented, “This is an old case and will not cause any political damage. The people of Bihar understand the truth.”
What Lies AheadAccording to CBI sources, the next hearing will determine the framework for the trial proceedings. The agency has named several individuals and companies in its chargesheet, alleging that the accused received prime land plots through benami transactions.
Legal experts believe that while the framing of charges represents a serious development, the case could take months, or even years, to reach a final verdict.
As the trial moves forward, the political implications could be significant, especially with elections around the corner. However, for now, all eyes remain on the courtroom, where the fate of one of India’s most controversial political families will be decided.
