A tragic and chilling incident unfolded in Mumbai's Chembur area, where a 43-year-old woman allegedly killed her six-month-old son by suffocating him with a pillow. The woman later told police that she was overwhelmed by personal trauma, abandonment, and illness.
A Series of AbandonmentsAccording to police, the woman had been married three times, but each marriage ended in separation. She later entered a relationship with another man, with whom she became pregnant. However, he too abandoned her upon learning about the pregnancy.
After giving birth, the woman discovered that she and her infant son were both HIV positive, a revelation that deeply shocked her. She stated she was financially strained, unemployed, and emotionally shattered.
Attack and ArrestThe incident came to light after the police control room received a call about a woman trying to stab another woman. When the police reached the scene, they arrested the accused and found the baby’s lifeless body in a swing. It was also revealed that the woman had attacked another woman—her former employer—before planning to end her own life.
Court StatementPresented before the court, the woman narrated her struggles: repeated marital failures, betrayal by her boyfriend, the shock of the HIV diagnosis, and the rising burden of medical expenses. She said, “I was devastated. I didn’t want my son to suffer the same fate as me.”
A Wake-Up CallThis heartbreaking case has not only stunned authorities but also triggered deeper questions about mental health support, women's safety, social neglect, and stigma around HIV. The police have sent the child's body for post-mortem, and further investigation is underway.
