At 1:59 a.m. IST on Saturday, a moderate earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale struck Pakistan, originating at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the National Center for Seismology. The tremor's epicenter was recorded at latitude 28.30 N and longitude 65.25 E.
This event follows a magnitude 3.2 earthquake that shook Karachi on October 2, located 7 kilometers northwest of Malir. While no casualties or damage have been reported from these recent quakes, the repeated tremors have caused considerable anxiety among residents.
Pakistan lies at the tectonic junction of the Indian and Eurasian plates, making it prone to seismic activity. The country has experienced several earthquakes in recent weeks, including a significant 6.2 magnitude quake in early September near Jalalabad, Afghanistan, impacting regions in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.
This earthquake-prone geography highlights the vulnerability of provinces such as Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan to seismic events. Rescue and relief efforts in affected areas, especially in Afghanistan after last month’s devastating 6.0-magnitude quake, continue amid infrastructural challenges.
