Trump is now facing criticism at home over tariffs, US Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee said - India was unnecessarily targeted

Democrat lawmakers said that the 50 percent tariff imposed on India is causing 'harm to Americans'. The committee further said that two decades of hard work by both parties has brought about a trajectory in the relationship between India and America but this tariff is 'destroying' this relationship.

Democrats Criticise Trump: After imposing 50 percent tariff on India, US President Donald Trump is getting cornered in his own 'home'. Now the leaders of the Democratic Party in the US Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee have criticized Trump. The committee said that 'It is not right to target only India for buying oil from Russia because China imports the most oil from Moscow but tariff has not been imposed on it as a penalty.'

Tariffs are 'destroying this relationship' - Democrats

Democrat lawmakers said that the 50 percent tariff imposed on India is causing 'harm to Americans'. The committee further said that two decades of hard work by both parties has brought about a trajectory in the relationship between India and America but this tariff is 'destroying' this relationship.

Instead of imposing sanctions on China or others purchasing larger amounts of Russian oil, Trump's singling out India with tariffs, hurting Americans & sabotaging the US-India relationship in the process.

Exports worth $48.2 billion will be affected

The Democrats' attack comes as additional 25 percent tariffs that Trump has linked to India's trade of Russian oil take effect. The duties double the existing 25 percent tariffs imposed earlier this month. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government estimates the tariffs will affect $48.2 billion worth of exports. Officials have warned the new duties could make shipments to the US economically unviable, leading to job cuts and a slowdown in economic growth.

There is a problem in trade talks as well

However, Prime Minister Modi has refused to bow to the pressure. The US has currently exempted some sectors such as pharmaceuticals and electronic products from these additional tariffs, giving India some relief as India has a significant stake in these sectors. India-US trade relations have expanded in recent years, but they are still vulnerable to disputes over market access and domestic political pressures. India was one of the first countries to initiate trade talks with the Trump administration but no deal has been reached so far as the US has been demanding greater access to India's agriculture and dairy sectors.
