France has backed down over a controversial new passport control scheme in a win for British tourists. Following the launch of the new Entry/Exit System (EES) throughout Europe, concerns have emerged regarding France's border entry procedures. Travellers bound for France had been forced to answer questions on whether they had a return ticket, enough money, reserved accommodation and had arranged insurance.
Passengers who failed to meet the necessary requirements, such as those planning to book accommodation upon arrival, faced more rigorous questioning by border police. This sparked concerns about potential lengthy delays, with some passengers potentially being deemed ineligible to travel.
However, a top boss at the Channel Tunnel train operator has revealed French officials have scrapped the interrogation.
Just a handful of travellers will face the questions, rather than every single passenger, until at least April next year.
Simon Lejeune, chief stations and safety officer for Eurostar, told the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee: "We know those questions have caused significant confusion, particularly within the kiosk process.
"We're very pleased that, through discussions with the French ministry and our colleagues, it's been agreed that those questions can be technically removed from the kiosks during the initial six-month introduction phase of the new system.
"A sense of pragmatism is returning. The questioning is becoming less systematic and more targeted, which is a positive development."
The EES requires visitors to attend a kiosk to register fingerprints and passports when entering specific EU countries.
The system has been in operation since October 12 and is being gradually adopted at key entry points, including airports and train stations.
It's specifically designed for non-EU nationals visiting the area for a short stay, defined as up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
Data collection will be gradually introduced at border crossing points with full implementation by April 10, 2026.
