A powerful 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Greece on Wednesday, July 23, between two holiday hotspots. The huge tremor hit between the islands of Crete, the holiday destination of thousands of Brits every year, and Antikythera shortly before 4.30pm local time. Initially, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said that the earthquake was of a higher magnitude before revising it to 5.3.
The earthquake hit some three miles off the coast of Antikythera, according to Greece's Geodynamic Institute. The earthquake was reportedly felt in some parts of Crete. The epicentre of the quake is 13 miles off the coast of the island of Antikythera at a depth of 36 miles. Video footage shared exclusively with the Express shows sunbeds rocking on a beach in Crete that is popular with tourists.
