Meghan Markle was said to always have a fine taste in luxuries, and that approach allegedly continued even after she married into the Royal Family. The Duchess of Sussex, who is celebrating her 44th birthday today, allegedly still wanted to receive freebies from luxury designer brands, even after her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018, according to a royal book.
Author and journalist Tina Brown, who is usually critical of the Sussexes, claimed that Meghan used her now-defunct blog, The Tig, to get access to luxury freebies. She wrote in her book The Palace Papers: Inside the House of Windsor, the Truth and the Turmoil: "She [Meghan] won a reputation among the marketers of luxury brands of being warmly interested in receiving bags of designer swag."
According to the author, Meghan's penchant for freebies did not stop after 2018.
Ms Brown said that following the wedding, a member of Meghan's new team wrote to a publicist to say: "Make sure [the publicist] knows that she can still send me anything.
"She's always been one of the good ones."
While promoting the book in 2022, the author claimed that the duchess was eyeing up deals with other celebrities even before her royal exit, and that she had to "leave at the table" due to her royal status.
She told The Washington Post: "Meghan couldn't resist everything that was on offer on the celebrity buffet.
They [Harry and Meghan] wanted to be able to have a commercial arm to their activities.
"Meghan certainly saw deals that were there to be made that they had to leave on the table because they were royals."
Regarding their bombshell exit, the royal author said: "I really think Harry wanted out, himself. Meghan gave Harry the tools to leave.
"She understood the world of agents and deals. I mean, this wasn't Harry's world, but suddenly he had in Meghan, a very worldly strategist, whom he decided to trust above all the other advisors.
"I think they both completely underestimated what it was going to be like without the Palace platform."
The Duchess of Sussex has never commented on Ms Brown's claims.
