In an Indiana backyard, a sunflower has reached extraordinary heights, capturing worldwide attention. Alex Babich, a Ukrainian immigrant and passionate gardener, has cultivated a sunflower that soars nearly 36 feet (11 meters) into the sky, earning the Guinness World Record for the tallest sunflower ever measured. Nicknamed “Clover,” the flower stands taller than many telephone poles, symbolizing both Babich’s dedication and his deep connection to his Ukrainian heritage.

This remarkable achievement is not just a horticultural feat—it is a tribute to Ukraine, where sunflowers hold profound cultural and national significance. For Babich, the towering sunflower represents roots, resilience, and a lasting family legacy.

World’s tallest sunflower record: Alex Babich’s journey from Ukraine to Indiana

Born and raised in Ukraine, Alex Babich immigrated to the United States at the age of 14, following the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The experience of displacement and growing up amidst scarcity cultivated a deep appreciation for gardening. Seven years ago, Babich began growing sunflowers as a personal homage to his homeland.

As reported by AP news, his early experiments produced sunflowers reaching 13 feet (4 meters), then 15 feet (4.5 meters), and eventually 19 feet (5.8 meters). Babich’s curiosity and determination sparked a question that drove him for years: “How tall can these sunflowers grow?” Through trial, error, and consistent care, he nurtured Clover into a record-breaking giant.

“It’s one of my kids,” Babich reflected. “You’re out there every day taking care of it.” The sunflower’s growth has been a family endeavor, with his 10-year-old son adding four-leaf clovers to the leaves for good luck—a ritual that inspired the flower’s name.

Tallest sunflower measurement: Guinness confirms Clover’s world record height

On September 3, 2025, the moment of truth arrived. Babich and a crowd of approximately 85 witnesses, including master gardeners and local officials, watched as Guinness World Records representatives measured Clover. A 40-foot cherry picker was employed, while drones and cameras documented the historic occasion.

The measurement confirmed Clover’s astonishing height of 35 feet, 9 inches (11 meters, 22.9 centimeters), surpassing the previous record in Germany by more than five feet (1.5 meters). “It’s very emotional,” Babich admitted. “It’s as good as it gets for someone who grows giants.”

Sunflowers as a symbol of peace and solidarity

For Babich, growing this sunflower carries a weight of meaning far beyond its size. Sunflowers have long been the national flower of Ukraine, symbolizing peace, resilience, and hope. Following Russia’s 2022 invasion, sunflowers became a symbol of solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

Babich’s passion for sunflowers intensified after witnessing the ongoing war. “We just hope this inspires some people in the right places,” he said. The symbolism of Clover connects personal heritage with global awareness, bridging past and present struggles. Sunflowers have historically been planted in Ukraine during significant events, from nuclear disarmament ceremonies in 1996 to environmental cleanup efforts after the Chernobyl disaster.

Beyond the world record, Clover will feature in a documentary titled Bloom, set for release in the summer of 2025. Babich is also sharing his love for sunflowers with the wider community, planting seeds at campsites, passing out packets at festivals, and inspiring children to nurture their own gardens. Each seed packet carries a simple yet powerful message: “Spread the love – sunflower seeds.”

Babich envisions the story of Clover enduring for generations. “I’m going to die someday, but the stories of this flower will live on,” he said. His sunflowers, now giants of both size and symbolism, promise to inspire families, gardeners, and communities worldwide.
